Iraqi universities and academic institutions achieved important competitive results in the Scimago World Ranking for 2022 which evaluated eight thousand and eighty-four institutions around the world.

Thirty-nine Iraqi institutions and universities, including twenty-eight governmental universities topped by Baghdad, Al-Mustansiriya and Technology universities.
It is worth noting that the Scimago ranking is based on a composite index that combines three different criteria based on research performance (50%), innovation output (30%), and societal impact (20%) each main indicator includes sub-indicators such as the number of papers publishes, the quality of journals in which they are published, and the number of citations, Reference and relative impact factors as well as publication requirements for at least 100 SCOPUS searches within the evaluation year.
