BASRA UNIVERSITY ORGANIZES A SCIENTIFIC SYMPOSIUM ON (AL-YSOU DAM: ITS ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS IN IRAQ AND THE POSITION OF INTERNATIONAL LAW ON IT:
On Tuesday 6/29/2021, the Economics department at the College of Administration and Economics at the University of Basra organized a scientific symposium on (Al ysou Dam: its economic and environmental impacts in Iraq and the position of international law on it) with the participation of researchers and specialists.
The symposium included several axes in which Prof. Dr. Sami Obaid Al-Tamimi spoke about the Al ysou Dam and its economic and environmental effects in Iraq, Prof. Dr. Shukri Al-Hassan from the college of Arts referred to the potential environmental impact of Turkey’s dams on Iraq, and Prof. Dr. Sajid Ahmed Al-Rikabi from the college of Law focused on Iraq’s legal rights as a state riparian on an international river (Tigris).
The symposium aimed at examining the economic effects of the Alysou Dam in Iraq and clarifying Iraq's water rights as a riparian state on the Tigris River.
The symposium recommended setting appropriate water plans and policies to confront the water crisis in Iraq, using diplomacy to solve the water problem with Turkey, and applying international law to guarantee Iraq's water rights.
