A MASTER'S THESIS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BASRAH EXAMINES THE ROLE OF FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT IN ENHANCING PARTICIPATION IN GLOBAL VALUE CHAINS

A master's thesis at the College of Administration and Economics, University of Basrah, examined the role of foreign direct investment in enhancing participation in global value chains—specifically in selected countries—with the potential for Iraq to benefit from its findings.

The thesis, submitted by student Noor Karim Yassin, aimed to shed light on global value chains and understand the international production structure and the factors influencing it.

The thesis included an analysis of the impact of foreign direct investment on participation in these chains, based on data from Turkey and Saudi Arabia for the period 2000-2022.

The thesis concluded that there is a direct relationship between foreign direct investment and integration into global value chains, while Iraq's participation was unilateral.

The thesis recommended attracting foreign investment towards high value-added productive sectors, improving the business environment and infrastructure, and joining international economic blocs.
